Powered access equipment rental companies in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland will be required to achieve an internationally-recognised quality standard as a condition of membership of the international organisation for operators of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs), in a drive to improve safety and quality.

From the end of 2024, powered access rental businesses on the island of Ireland will need to achieve IPAF Rental+ certification to qualify for membership of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF).

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2023, IPAF promotes and enables the safe, effective use of powered access equipment worldwide.

IPAF Rental+ certification was created to demonstrate that a powered access hire/rental company has been independently audited and meets rigorous health and safety, quality, and environmental standards.

IPAF’s Irish Country Manager Damien O’Connor said: “Our Rental+ certification scheme was created to ensure that customers can hire powered access equipment with confidence, knowing that they are working with suppliers that meet rigorous health and safety, quality, and environmental standards.

“Our member-led Irish Council introduced IPAF Rental+ certification as a membership requirement to reinforce rental members’ commitment to quality and safety in the powered access industry and ensure consistent standards across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“Support is available to members and prospective members to help them to gain accreditation by the end of 2024.”

Gaining IPAF Rental+ certification demonstrates that companies meet all audit requirements.

Annual  audits are conducted to ensure ongoing compliance and promote continuous improvement.

IPAF UK and Ireland market General Manager Richard Whiting said: “Our Irish Council’s decision to mandate IPAF Rental+ Certification for its rental members is a positive step and signifies their collective commitment to maintaining and improving standards.

“Our commitment to Rental+ goes beyond merely benefiting rental companies - one of its main purposes is to enhance safety and assurance for contractors and end users.

“IPAF Rental+ certification is an ongoing process that allows contractors and end users of powered access equipment to hire from certified companies with real confidence.

“It’s exciting to see IPAF members from throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland working together for the greater good of the industry.”
