Where are we now with telematics? How did we get here? And what developments can we expect from telematics products aimed at our industry?

Somewhere around 10 years ago we began hearing about telematics and the connected fleet revolution coming to the OHV (off-highway-vehicle) industry. Now, 10 years on, we have yet to see the advertised advantages and adoption of telematics systems in the industry. Specifically, the MEWP sector hasn’t seen any significant integration of telematics and the associated benefits.

In this presentation we will go over some of the reasons that there hasn’t been widespread adoption in the OHV industry, and specifically with MEWP machinery. There is a long list of benefits that telematics can provide for the OEMs, rental companies, and end users of MEWP machines. We will look at when and how we will start to see telematics impact the day-to-day work of operators, site managers and fleet managers.

In particular we’ll review some of the innovations in familiarization, safety, and machine utilization that are coming down the pipe from telematics providers, and how these products can fit in to the day-to-day operations of our industry.

David Swan has recently taken on the role of Product Manager at Skyjack where he is responsible for driving innovation and technological inclusion across machine categories. His background is in marketing and integrating tech-based products, most recently directing the development and integration of a connected business IoT solution.
